Create the community you want to live in.

Published Tue 08 Aug 2017

If neighbourhoods are a reflection of those who live in them; have you ever wondered why some neighbourhoods seem so active, vital and dynamic while others lack life and personality? A healthy, happy community is often the result of residents getting involved and working collaboratively.  Lasting positive social change often starts with people referred to as ‘change agents’.

Create the community you want to live in. Change agents take the time to get to know people and learn all they can about the history, connections, concerns and aspirations of their neighbourhood. They make time to understand what makes their neighbourhood tick and why it’s so special - such as its natural beauty, great people, business opportunities or rich history. Some communities are lucky to have people like this who recognise and accept that all our experiences, viewpoints and attitudes are a bit different, but all are equally important.

As a process of change begins to grow, change agents can help to form a core group of community leaders who build their knowledge and skills, welcome others into the process and share the workload. At some point, they will probably form an organisation or other formal structure to act as a representative community group.

Once these foundations are in place, everyone in the neighbourhood can help to make a plan to progress community ideas or solve the most important local issues. Once all residents have had the chance to participate and a plan of action is agreed, communities can secure help from local government, political representatives, local service clubs or businesses, health services or community organisations. These organisations are often more than happy to assist where they can with funds, knowledge, resources or expertise.  All communities need change agents.  If you recognise one in your community give them your support and help to create the community you want to live in.

The Warralily Community Residents Group meets once a month to develop their new community by planning activities, projects, interest groups, classes and events. The next meeting is 10am, August 12th, in the Warralily Community House, 6 Anglet Way Warralily.
