How to clean your home naturally

Published Thu 14 Apr 2016

When it comes to cleaning your home, sometimes all-natural is the best way to go - whether you’re a keen greenie, or you’d like to protect your family and pets from nasty chemicals. Luckily, nature has quite a few tricks up her sleeve, most of which are simple household items!

How to clean your home naturally Must-haves in your cleaning kit:
  • Baking soda
  • Castile soap (a vegetable oil-based soap)
  • Vinegar
  • Lemon juice
  • Essential Oils (tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint etc)

Our top 7 recipes for all-natural cleaning success:

  1. Say goodbye to soap scum - Combine one-part water with one-part vinegar, plus a few drops of essential oils if you’d like to mask the smell. Spray, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe away.
  2. All natural disinfectant - Banish bleach from your home: just mix two cups of water, 3 tablespoons of liquid soap and 20-30 drops of tea tree oil!
  3. DIY air freshener - All you need is a jar, baking soda and your preferred essential oil. Follow these instructions and your house will be smelling - naturally - fresh in no time.
  4. Simple all-purpose surface cleaner - Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle - but if you’re cleaning marble, granite or stone, skip the vinegar and use rubbing alcohol or even vodka instead.
  5. Dishwater detergent - Combine one cup of liquid castile soap with one cup of water and two teaspoons of lemon juice in a jar. Add some of this to one cleaning liquid compartment of your dishwasher, and fill the other with vinegar.
  6. Fabric softener - Buy 4 litres of vinegar and add 20-30 drops of your essential oil of choice. Add ⅓ of a cup to your load of washing for snuggly results, minus the chemicals.
  7. Windows and mirrors - Mix one part vinegar with four parts water, add some lemon juice if you’d like, and scrub away with a sponge.
